Community Classroom

The Community Classroom, within The Merc Co+op, is used for co-op classes and education purposes. When not in use for in-store education, it is available for use to members of our community. Reserving the Community Classroom is required, and assures that it will be available when you need it. The following guidelines will answer most of your questions about use of the room.

Who Can Use the Community Classroom? 

Groups and organizations needing a space for community meetings (e.g. garden clubs, service organizations, etc.) are welcomed to use the Community Classroom.  Seating capacity of the room is approximately 25. The room is not intended for commercial use, promoting a business, education seminars, any event for which a fee will be charged, or classes (except those sponsored by The Merc Co+op).

Allowing a group to use the Community Classroom does not in any way constitute an endorsement by the co-op’s Board of Directors, management or staff, of that group’s policies or beliefs, and no claim to that effect nor claim of the co-op’s sponsorship may be used, explicity or implicitly, in advertising.

Cost 

There is no charge to use the Community Classroom.

Availability 

First priority for room use is given to our own educational programming and store needs. As we continue to build our education program, we need to keep the Community Classroom available for the increasing number of requests for presentations from schools and organizations. For this reason we cannot provide a permanent or continuous meeting space for any organization. Organizations may schedule just one meeting at a time.

When not in use for co-op educational programs, the Community Classroom is available during The Merc Co+op’s normal store hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. We do ask groups to finish evening meetings by 9:45 p.m. There is a 3-hour limit on the use of the room. Entrance and exit to the Community Classroom is only through the door at the end of Register 1. Please check in with the head cashier (Register 1) when you arrive to let them know you’ll be using the room.

Reserving the Room 

To reserve the use of the Community Classroom you must first fill out a Room Reservation Request (attached). This form should be mailed to The Merc Co+op (attention Nancy), brought to the Customer Service Desk, or deposited in the Class Registration Cart. Please allow least 14 days lead-time to process your request. We will call to let you know if the room is available when you need it. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will place your group’s name on the Community Classroom Use Calendar. The room can be reserved up to one month in advance.

General Information

Requesting groups are responsible for setting up the room to fit their needs. We suggest one member of your group arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your meeting to prepare the room for your meeting. When moving tables and chairs please lift rather than drag them to avoid scraping the floor.  At the end of your meeting the room should be returned to its original set-up. There is a helpful diagram on the north wall and markings on the floor to help with table placement. Please wipe your tables and sweep the floor.

The Community Classroom is set up with eight folding tables and 25 chairs. Extra chairs are stacked in the room. Please, do not remove any chairs from the Deli Cafe seating area to bring into the Community Classroom. There is a projector and screen available for use as well as a permanently affixed dry erase board in the room. Please bring dry-erase markers and erasers if you intend to use the board. No tacks, nails, or tape are to be placed on doors or walls. A garbage can, broom and dustpan are also available.

Entry and exit to the room is through the French door by the end of Register 1. The west-facing class entry door will remain locked.

No outside food or drink is allowed in the Community Classroom. You are welcome to purchase food from The Merc Co+op to bring into the Community Classroom. Please pay for your food before bringing it into the classroom. If you bring deli dishes into the room, please return them to the dirty dish buckets in the deli. No alcohol can be brought into the classroom.

Children are always welcomed at The Merc Co+op and in the Community Classroom. If you are planning a meeting that includes children, please have them stay with you in the classroom.

Groups reserving The Merc Co+op’s Community Classroom accept full responsibility for care of the room and its contents and will be held liable for any damage caused to the co-op’s property. We reserve the right to grant or deny use of the Community Classroom to any requesting group.
