Kitchen Basics, Episode 1: Reading a Recipe

Reading a Recipe

If you’re fairly new to cooking from home, the easiest place to start for inspiration is a recipe. It’s going to lay out the ingredients and the instructions to making your meal. There’s a few tips you can follow to make sure when you’re trying a recipe for the first time, the dish turns out like you intend.

  • Read it through twice:

    • Do you have all of the kitchen tools and ingredients you need - and more importantly, do those need to be softened, frozen, thawed, chopped, or prepped in some way before you begin?

    • How much time does it take to prepare? Are you looking for something quick for tonight, or do you have a little extra time?

    • How many servings does it make? Are you feeding yourself or your whole family?

  • Get out the things you need before you begin, potentially measure them in advance if you have the space. This will ensure you’re prepared if any steps need to happen quickly, and that you won’t miss an ingredient.

From Laura, Outreach Manager - “I frequently go to the local library and check out cookbooks - reading through them, you can learn new techniques, explore cuisines from anywhere in the world, and build your confidence to try something different.”

If you're new to cooking at home, learning what to look for when reading a recipe is an important first step. Laura will walk you through a couple recipes to show you what to watch for when trying something new!
