From the Board of Directors: Reflection and Renewed Focus

From the Board of Directors

Hans Carttar, Board President

My name is Hans Carttar, and as I enter my third year on the board, I’m pleased to introduce myself as the new president. I’m truly honored to have been elected to this role, and I’m excited to serve alongside a dedicated board and leadership team as we move into an important year of change for the Merc.

This coming year marks a period of transition on several fronts. We are moving from two stores to one, reshaping the board from nine members to seven, and welcoming three new directors who bring fresh perspectives and energy. While change is never easy, it creates opportunities for growth, reflection, and renewed focus—and that’s very much where we find ourselves today.

One of the most difficult decisions we made leading into this year was the closure of the KCK store. This was not a decision made lightly. Our leadership team—first under Rita’s guidance and then with Seth at the helm—worked relentlessly to make that store successful. They evaluated every option, explored every possibility, and truly left no stone unturned. Ultimately, their work made it clear that there was nothing more that could reasonably be done. Even so, knowing that closing the KCK store was the right decision didn’t make it an easy one.

I want to take a moment to recognize the team at the KCK store. Their commitment, professionalism, and engagement throughout this process have been exceptional. They showed up every day with dedication and care, and that matters. The experience has also strengthened Seth and his team, equipping them with valuable lessons they are excited to carry forward and apply at the Lawrence store.

As a board, we are energized by what lies ahead. We believe in the direction the Merc is heading and in the people who are making it happen. I’m personally excited to be part of this next chapter and to support the work of our staff, leadership, and fellow board members as we move forward together.

About the Board

The Merc Co+op’s Board of Directors is made up of seven co-op owners elected by the ownership to serve three-year terms. Any co-op owner is eligible to run for a board position.

The Board acts on behalf of co-op owners, responsible for guiding the overall vision of the co-op and monitoring progress toward that vision. To support this work, the board establishes policies that govern both themselves and the General Manager. The board works closely with the General Manager, who provides regular reports on store operations, including finances, customer satisfaction, and more.

Board Meetings

All co-op owners are invited to attend monthly board meetings. Early in the agenda, the board reserves ten minutes of space to hear from owners who wish to address the board.
