Leslie knew art and creating were her passion from an early age, but she found her medium when she took her first printmaking class in college.

“I fell in love. With painting, you end up with one piece and only certain people are exposed to the work. With print, you sell them cheaper, you get them to people easier. Printmaking aligns with my politics.”

Just like the co-op’s beginnings, Leslie started her business in her basement, printing t-shirts and merch for bands with clients stopping by her house for pickup. She’s been in her current studio and shop in East Lawrence since 2010. She prints on anything flat — posters, garments, gifts, onesies, hats and more. All of her prints and done by hand, and the process is part of what makes her work personally satisfying.

But the appeal of printmaking extends beyond the studio: partnering with the community and collaborating to bring their projects from a concept to a final product.

“I’m working for myself, and working with the community I love. There’s really something cool about Lawrence, it’s why we live here. For me it’s really about making connections with all walks of life, helping others realize their ideas.”

Leslie partners with local organizations like the Lawrence Public Library and recently The Willow, celebrating their 50th year with custom merch. Portions of the proceeds go to support their advocacy work for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Those partnerships reflect a broader belief that a business can be a force for good in the community, and a belief that her business and her platform come with a responsibility to live her values openly.

“I didn’t think I’d have to declare that I’m anti-fascist, but here we are. How I work, how I think are so hugely important and it needs to be talked about. I know I’ve lost some business because of it, but I guess I feel I need to set a good example.”
