Penny Rounding

Pennies will no longer be given as change.

Penny Rounding

Effective Wednesday, October 21, the co-op is implementing change rounding for cash transactions. The U.S. Mint stopped minting pennies in November 2025, and our bank can no longer supply us with enough pennies for the registers.

If you are paying with cash, you will no longer receive pennies in your change. Change will be rounded to the nearest 5¢ in the customer’s favor.

Example: If your total is $4.93 and you pay with $5.00 cash, your change will be rounded, and you will get 10¢ as change instead of 7¢.

Only cash transactions are affected; credit, debit, gift card, EBT/WIC cards and checks will continue to be charged the exact amount.

If your total ends in a 5 or a 0, no rounding will happen. Pennies will still be accepted as tender. Prices of items and sales tax are not affected by this change.

To summarize:

  • You will no longer receive pennies in your change

  • If needed, change will be rounded in your favor

  • Pennies remain legal tender, and you can use them to pay for your purchases

  • Only cash transactions are affected
