CANDIDATE STATEMENT

1. Relevant work experience, e.g. employment, volunteer work, etc.

I am originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and I came to Lawrence in 1992 to attend the University of Kansas. What started as a place I came for school became a community I fell in love with and eventually called home.

I spent 23 years in the military, where I developed strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and resource-management skills while working with people from many different backgrounds. Those experiences taught me the importance of accountability, teamwork, adaptability, and serving others.

Today, I continue to be involved in the Lawrence community through my work with the ACA Business Club, where I build relationships and support local engagement. My personal and professional experiences have given me a deep appreciation for community, diversity, and the importance of supporting local.

2. Previous experience with other groups.

Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to work with people from many different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. Growing up in the DRC, coming to Lawrence as a KU student, and building my life in this community have shaped how I understand the importance of inclusion and connection.

I have also worked with diverse groups through my professional and community experiences. I have learned that strong groups are built through communication, trust, respect, and a willingness to listen to different perspectives.

3. What would you bring to The Merc Co+op’s Board of Directors?

I would bring a diverse perspective, a strong connection to Lawrence, and a genuine commitment to supporting local.

My experiences have taught me to appreciate different perspectives, listen to others, and work collaboratively toward common goals. I would also bring strong leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills to the Board.

Most importantly, I would bring a genuine interest in the Lawrence community and a belief in the value of supporting local businesses, producers, and organizations. I also understand the importance of good food—not only for health, but for connecting people to their families, cultures, and community.

4. Why would you like to serve on The Merc Co+op’s Board of Directors?

I would like to serve on The Merc Board because I believe in the importance of community and supporting local.

I came to Lawrence from the DRC in 1992 to attend KU, and over the years this community became home. I fell in love with Lawrence and the people who make it such a special place, and I want to continue giving back.

The Merc’s focus on local food, community, and connection strongly resonates with me. Coming from a different culture and having worked with people from many backgrounds, I understand how food can bring people together and connect us to our families, cultures, health, and community.

Serving on The Merc Board would be a meaningful opportunity to contribute my experiences and perspective while supporting an organization that helps make Lawrence a stronger and more connected community.
