CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Greetings! To introduce myself, my name is Melanie Galyon, and I’ve been a Merc member/owner since 2000. Though never an employee, I helped a dear friend set the Wellness Department when The Merc moved to its current location and have been passionate about giving to The Community Mercantile since. In addition, I have served as a volunteer for the YMCA in Mexico, served on Prairie Moon Waldorf School’s finance committee for eight years, served as treasurer for Lawrence Community Nursery School, and have operated a small business for the past 17 years.

Being a member of the Board of Directors is a position I take seriously. Serving a community- based nonprofit is an invaluable experience for me, and I feel that having a long-standing relationship with The Merc allows me to provide perspective on where The Merc has been, where The Merc is now, and where The Merc is headed. As a board member I would like to evaluate assets and opportunities of the Merc on a community level, revisit the mission and implement thoughtful conversation and steps to realize and refresh said mission of our long standing, community-based organization.
