The Merc Co+op is excited to announce the recipients of the 2026 Change for our Community program. “Change” gives shoppers the opportunity to donate their spare change to local organizations every time they shop. Each month, a different organization is featured as the recipient, and 100% of all donations collected go to that specific organization.
Since the program began in January 2014, we have raised over $700,000 for local nonprofits.
After more than a year in the role of General Manager, I can say without a doubt that one of my favorite parts of the position is my increased availability to our owners. Hearing stories about how people discovered the co-op, what keeps them coming back, and even how the co-op has changed their lives is such a heartwarming part of the work that we do.
The fifth cooperative principle is "Education, Training, and Information." As leaders, one of the most meaningful parts of our work is preparing others for future opportunities. As we face the difficult reality of closing our Kansas City, KS store, this principle has guided us in ensuring our staff feel supported, empowered, and prepared for what comes next.

Over the past month, our co-op has faced its share of challenges. From winding down operations at our KCK store, to unexpected setbacks with the Lawrence walk-in freezer renovation, to the arrival of new competitors — it’s certainly been a full season. But as I reflect on this time, these obstacles aren’t what stand out most. What truly defines this moment in our co-op’s history is the resilience, spirit, and celebration of our staff and our communities…

Thursday, November 13 we’re donating 3% of Lawrence sales to Just Food to help fill the gap left by paused SNAP benefits. At The Merc Co+op, we believe everyone deserves fresh, nutritious food. And we know that SNAP and other government assistance programs may be inaccessible or reduced on or after November 1. For those who rely on these programs to access groceries, even a short disruption can mean difficult choices about food, bills, and other essentials.
The Merc Co+op is adding additional ways for folks to qualify for our MercShare+ ownership program which provides an everyday discount of 10% off groceries purchased at the co-op.
